Therapy for Depression

At times, life can feel dark, heavy, or empty, as though joy, meaning, or colour has faded. This may arise suddenly in response to a painful life event, or it may feel like a weight you have been quietly carrying for a long time.

You may notice thoughts such as:

  • “I feel stuck.”
  • “Everything feels pointless.”
  • “Why am I sad all the time?”
  • “Sometimes I think about dying.”

When persistent sadness, hopelessness, emotional numbness, or a loss of interest in life become the norm, it may be a sign that you are experiencing symptoms of depression. Depression is a natural human response to pain, loss, overwhelm, or unmet emotional needs.

Therapy for suicidal ideation

Therapy for depression is about creating space to understand your experience and gently support change where things feel stuck.

Signs Depression May Be Impacting Your Life

  • Feeling tired or depleted most of the time
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
  • Low motivation or difficulty starting tasks
  • Feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, or loneliness
  • Emotional sensitivity or crying often and easily
  • Difficulty concentrating or focusing
  • Passive thoughts about death or dying

If these experiences feel familiar, support may be helpful.

Therapy for Depression

Depression can feel incredibly lonely to navigate on your own. My aim is to offer a gentle, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can reflect, share, and make sense of your emotional experience.

When individuals are supported to speak about their inner world, they often begin to identify patterns in their thoughts, behaviours, relationships, and circumstances. This awareness supports meaningful change, at a pace that feels right for you.

I believe growth happens within relationships grounded in connection, compassion, and acceptance.  Together, we work collaboratively to understand your experience of depression and create a personalized plan to support you.

Support for Depression May Include

  • Psychoeducation to better understand depression, mood cycles, and the mind–body connectio
  • Exploring self-talk, inner dialogue, and patterns of self-criticism
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
  • Gently engaging in behavioural activation to support motivation and reconnect with meaningful experiences
  • Exploring emotional experiences, inner life, and past and present stressors
  • Addressing feelings of loneliness, grief, or loss while reducing shame and self-blame
  • Exploring relationship patterns, attachment needs, and experiences of connection or disconnection
  • Identifying personal values, purpose, and sources of meaning
  • Polyvagal-informed approaches to understand the nervous system, including states of shutdown, overwhelm, safety, and regulation
  • Trauma-informed care, acknowledging that unresolved or underlying trauma can contribute to depression and low mood
  • Ongoing assessment and support around suicidal thoughts, with care and attention to safety

Support for Suicidal Thinking

Therapeutic Support for Suicidal Ideation

In my practice, I offer evidence-based psychotherapy for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or urges. Therapy provides a space where you are encouraged to speak openly and honestly about any thoughts, feelings, urges, or plans related to suicidality.

My aim is to create a non-judgmental, compassionate, and emotionally safe environment where even the most frightening, intrusive, or painful thoughts can be shared without shame.  I believe when someone is struggling with suicidal ideation, it is essential that they do not feel alone with their inner experience.

Therapeutic support is grounded in an empathetic, collaborative, and evidence-based approach informed by best practices, including the Zero Suicide framework from the Zero Suicide Institute.

How Therapy Can Help

Together, we work to understand your unique experience, including past and present circumstances that may be contributing to suicidal thoughts. Therapy focuses on increasing safety, emotional understanding, and support, while gently addressing factors that may be intensifying distress.

Support will include:

  • Comprehensive risk assessment, including identifying and reducing access to means where possible

  • Collaborative safety planning, developed as a personalized, written plan outlining steps to take when suicidal thoughts intensify

  • Safety plans  including grounding strategies, coping tools, supportive activities, and contact information for trusted people and crisis supports

  • Learning and practising coping and self-soothing skills to help manage overwhelming emotions and urges

  • Identifying supportive activities, environments, and routines that promote stability and emotional regulation

  • Exploring connection with trusted family members or friends, when appropriate, to strengthen the circle of support

Professional support for suicidal ideation are always individualized. Therapy typically involves building a trusting therapeutic relationship, increasing emotional tolerance, strengthening protective factors, reducing harmful behaviours, and addressing challenging life circumstances.

If you are seeking ongoing therapeutic support for suicidal thoughts and feel this approach may be a good fit, I invite you to reach out to discuss next steps.
